ABOUT

In 2020, INOV launched a new R&D strategic area aimed at enhancing co-creation and integrating collaborative research and innovation to incubate novel ideas and solutions. This strategic evolution led to the formation, in 2024, of the INESC INOV-Lab – INESC INOV R&D Laboratory strategically positioned for international expansion, fundamental research exploration, and innovative breakthroughs through active global collaboration, top-tier publications, and effective technology transfer.

INESC INOV-Lab is a newly created R&D Unit within INOV (part of INESC system), and has already been recognised as one of the Affiliated Research Units of Instituto Superior Técnico – ULisboa (IST), where a team of professors develop their research activities. Given this structure and close interaction among partner institutions, INESC INOV-Lab has an organisation that includes specific bodies of its own, in addition to sharing other bodies with INOV and with INESC, while also taking advantage of IST’s bodies.

This R&D Unit works closely with a team of 82 academic researchers from 4 national partner institutions, each with specialised   expertise, unified by a common theme across R&D activities: DATA in all its stages—creation, transport, storage, processing, and analysis.

Mission

INESC INOV-Lab’s mission is to lead in scientific excellence and innovation driving data revolution and advancing digital transformation. It prioritises interdisciplinary research and collaboration with higher education institutions growth to tackle pressing societal and technological challenges more effectively and create sustainable growth and positive impact.

Vision

INESC INOV-Lab aims to be a globally recognised R&D centre known for navigating the intricate landscape of data-driven innovation. Through basic and applied research and development activities, technology development, and knowledge dissemination, it seeks to create a cohesive value creation cycle, from the inception of new research lines to the integration of market-driven solutions. This vision enables INESC INOV-Lab to establish itself as a catalyst for progress, enhancing competitiveness and resilience, fostering sustainable growth for all stakeholders, and a driving force in shaping a more sustainable and technologically advanced future for the benefit of society.
